Which life lessons of the past will resonate in the future?
Growing up, my parents had just two rules:
Don’t lie.
Read more books.
To me, they resembled fortune cookie messages more than life lessons.
I often wonder if they resorted to this very short list of directives because English wasn’t their 1st language so the rest of their rules were sort of lost in transition, or whether this was what it all boiled down to after a lifetime of living. Occasionally my dad would toss in “go to Church,” but typically that request fell on deaf ears so he saved his breath. My mom would add “birds of a feather, flocking together”… that one just made us laugh because she could never get the saying right.
Both my brother and I struggled to follow these two rules so honestly maybe they just figured why bother with the rest of the rules if we couldn’t even listen to these first two!
Thinking about these two simple rules now, I get it:
